Fondation Maeght

 sculpture

Aime Maeght was a dealer, exhibition maker and publisher who opened a gallery in Paris after the war which became one of the most influential and creative of the 20th century.  He exhibited Miro, Calder, Giacometti, Braque, Bonnard and Matisse among others.

The Marguerite and Aime Maeght Foundation in St Paul was inaugurated in 1964 by the Minister of Cultural Affairs Andre Malraux, it had been conceived and financed entirely by Aime and Marguerite to present contemporary art in all its forms.  Painters and sculptors collaborated with the Catalan architect Lluis Sert creating monumental works which were integrated in the gardens and building.   These included the Giacometti Courtyard, the Miro labyrinth, wall mosaics by Chagall and Tal-Coat, pool and stained glass by Braque and sculpture by Calder.

The natural environment is sublime, set among the pines and combined with the building and monumental works of art create a unique and special place for all those who visit the museum and take advantage of the cultural programmes and consult the library.
