My approach to teaching is to provide a structure within which you can express your creative potential. The structure is there to help, not constrain, and when your work shows promise in a particular direction, I will foster and encourage this. I will focus on providing tuition and help on a one to one basis.
Workshops run from 10 until 5 or 6 with a break for lunch. Discussion often carries on much longer...
Courses : no courses programmed, contact us if interested in May/June dates
Figure movement drawing and Qigong: I have been teaching and working on personal art projects relating to the moving figure for many years. Together we will work with the dancer Hsiao-Hwa Li to prepare a series of interlinked drawings and paintings of movement and dance. We will also visit local galleries such as the Matisse museum for inspiration. You will start the day with on hour of Qigong instructed by the model Hsiao-Hwa Li who is a qualified teacher (see profile) More...
Drawing the figure from the point of view of the painter: I have practiced and taught life drawing all my life. It is central to my teaching and my own work. We will work on a great variety of poses from extremely brief with the model holding unusual and surprising positions for a few seconds to a few hours allowing for a period of sustained work. The model will be mostly unclothed, but one day will be spent exploring some costume ideas. The purpose of this project is to use the figure to explore some of the fundamentals of drawing in relation to painting which could apply to any subject. We will explore a variety of media such as charcoal, pencil, pastel, crayon and oil pastel. Composition, mark making, tonality and issues of light space and weight will be explored as well as the structure of the figure itself. We will also visit local galleries for inspiration. More...
Painting from nature: Visual reality and inner experience: During the week we will go into the mountains and work together on a drawing project, a drawing in colour, and a session exploring pure colour. I will teach you complimentary mixing and other colour related techniques. We will work in the mountains and visit some of the famous local galleries, drawing inspiration from both to make a study leading to a free transcription This will be followed by an individual project where you will follow up and develop in your own way the area about which you feel passionate. Throughout the week I will encourage discussion of the qualities required to discover ones own path of spiritual and artistic development. We will alos visit local museums for inspiration. More...

Ray Atkins
I am a painter with a passion for working directly from the things I see. This contact with the outside world is essential to my creative process. I have painted all my life and frequently exhibited including at the Whitechapel, Hayward and Serpertine galleries in London and more recently in France (where I live) and Germany. I was trained at the Slade School in London and have taught at Reading University, Falmouth College of Arts, in adult education and at summer schools.
